FutureMed: A TRANSDISCIPLINARY NETWORK TO BRIDGE CLIMATE SCIENCE AND IMPACTS ON SOCIETY.

The new COST FutureMed action, led by the Meteorology and Climatology Area of the CEAM Foundation and funded by the European Union, will start on 1 November. The FutureMed action aims to analyse climate change and its impacts on the Mediterranean, integrating different visions from the scientific and social fields.

The Mediterranean is a hotspot of climate change that is currently affected by different types of risks, from extreme weather events to coastal erosion due to rising sea levels or increased pollution. These impacts spread like “cascades” across socio-economic sectors; in urban areas, these sequential or concurrent hazards are more disastrous than single events. Impacts affect ecosystems as well as economic activity or human health.

Despite the ubiquity of these connections, scientists and decision-makers often work in isolation, moving in parallel and missing the added value of cooperative efforts. FutureMed therefore aims to move beyond isolated approaches and move towards integrated efforts that promote effective science- and management-based decision-making. Transdisciplinary networks will be established within the project, including scientific, human health, social, governance and risk management approaches.

FutureMed will foster new synergies and scientific knowledge related to climate change and serve as a transdisciplinary and integrative platform connecting scientific knowledge on high-impact weather phenomena and climate change impacts with priority socio-economic sectors.
