MEDMOS: a new monitoring system for sea surface temperature and marine heatwaves in the Mediterranean

The Meteorology and Climatology Area has launched a new platform for monitoring and surveillance of the Mediterranean Sea, initially focused on sea surface temperature and marine heatwaves.
The Meteorology and Climatology Area of CEAM has launched the Mediterranean Monitoring System (MEDMOS), a new platform for monitoring and surveillance of the Mediterranean Sea, initially focused on sea surface temperature and marine heatwaves.
The Mediterranean Sea plays a fundamental role as a driver and regulator of the climate and meteorology of the Mediterranean region and, in particular, of the Valencian Region. Its temperature, heat storage capacity and interaction with the atmosphere directly influence numerous meteorological processes, including some of the extreme events that affect the territory.
Building on CEAM’s research line on the role of the Mediterranean Sea in regional meteorology and in the intensification of extremes, the Meteorology and Climatology Area has developed MEDMOS, a tool designed for the monitoring, analysis and communication of the state of the Mediterranean Sea.
The platform provides updated information on sea surface temperature, thermal anomalies and the evolution of marine heatwaves, allowing daily monitoring of Mediterranean conditions. It also incorporates historical information that may be of interest to the scientific community working on Mediterranean oceanography, meteorology and climatology, as well as to public administrations, policy-makers involved in planning and adaptation, the media and the general public.
Although in this first phase MEDMOS focuses mainly on sea surface temperature and marine heatwaves, additional relevant parameters are expected to be progressively incorporated, such as ocean heat content, sea level and other key indicators to better understand the evolution of the Mediterranean in the context of climate change.
With this initiative, the Meteorology and Climatology Area of CEAM strengthens its commitment to generating applied climate knowledge, monitoring emerging risks and transferring useful information to anticipate impacts, support decision-making and improve the resilience of Mediterranean territories.
