The coordinator of the Meteorology and Climatology area, analyzes the climate challenges of the Mediterranean on À Punt.
On September 4th, Samira Khodayar, head of the Meteorology and Climate Research area at CEAM, participated in the program Les Notícies del Matí on À Punt, where she discussed the effects of the warming of the Mediterranean Sea and the intensification of extreme weather events in the region.
During the interview, Khodayar explained that the Mediterranean has exceeded 30°C in some locations and warned that we are facing an unprecedented scenario. She noted that this temperature increase can lead to more extreme conditions, although she clarified that it is not the only factor influencing torrential rainfall episodes.
She also referred to the increased frequency and intensity of phenomena such as heatwaves, droughts, and forest fires, emphasizing that climate change provides the context that worsens these events. Khodayar stressed the need to promote prevention and adaptation policies and highlighted the key role of education and awareness as essential tools for citizen self-protection.
Khodayar advocated for local and regional adaptation strategies based on scientific evidence, stable funding, and smooth communication between science, institutions, and society.
