Medicane Jolina: the Meteorology and Climatology Area contributes to the ESA Media Workshop 2026

A visualization of medicane Jolina showed the advances developed within the framework of the MEDICANES project.
On 18 June, the Media Workshop 2026, organised by the European Space Agency (ESA), took place at its ESRIN centre in Frascati, Italy. The event brought together journalists specialised in meteorology and climatology, scientists, and experts from international organisations to discuss the contributions of new satellites and the application of artificial intelligence in forecasting, scientific research, and media communication.
During the workshop, results obtained within the MEDICANES project, were presented. This ESA initiative aims to improve the understanding, monitoring, and analysis of Mediterranean cyclones known as medicanes, with the participation of the Meteorology and Climatology Area. As part of the presentation of results, CEAM contributed to the visualisation of medicane Jolina using the Ocean Virtual Laboratory (OVL) tool, developed by OceanDataLab.
The visualisation presented shows the evolution of medicane Jolina shortly before it reached the coast of Libya on 18 March, combining different satellite products to provide a detailed view of the system’s structure and dynamics.
