Our researchers presented their most recent work, both in oral presentations and posters, on the study of extreme weather events in the Mediterranean.
From 4 to 8 May 2026, the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union was held in Vienna (Austria), with the participation of researchers from the Meteorology and Climatology Department of the CEAM Foundation. Our researchers presented their most recent work, both in oral presentations and posters, on the study of extreme weather events in the Mediterranean.
Among the lines of research presented at this conference were the VITUCLIM and SUHIST projects, which study the urban heat island effect in the city of Valencia, using both direct measurements from temperature and humidity sensors distributed throughout the city and satellite observations.
Preliminary results were also presented from the MEDICANES project, funded by the ESA, on the interactions between Mediterranean Sea temperature and medicanes, or quasi-tropical Mediterranean cyclones, and the analysis of their socio-economic impacts on Mediterranean countries.
Another area of research presented focused on the study of changes in extreme weather events across the Iberian Peninsula and the Mediterranean region, with findings regarding changes in the mechanisms that trigger extreme rainfall. Within this line of research, the atmospheric mechanisms that led to the October 2024 floods in the province of Valencia were analysed. Results recently published in a scientific article on the connection (simultaneous or consecutive occurrence) between different extreme events such as droughts, heatwaves and extreme rainfall in the Mediterranean were also presented.
