FutureMed holds its first Workshop and Training School to address climate challenges and socio-economic impacts in the Mediterranean region.
The European initiative COST Action FutureMed, coordinated by the Meteorology and Climatology Area of CEAM, has held its first Workshop and Training School, bringing together nearly 100 participants from across the Mediterranean basin. The event gathered researchers, professionals, and policy experts to analyze climate impacts, risks associated with extreme weather events, and strategies for sustainable adaptation and inclusive resilience.
Over the course of three intensive sessions — “Climate Extremes, Risks & Landscape Impacts”, “Pathways for Just and Sustainable Adaptation”, and “Participatory Decisions & Inclusive Resilience” — participants discussed the scientific, social, and economic challenges facing the region. The event featured the participation of more than 30 expert speakers, as well as numerous roundtables, presentations, and poster sessions.
Among the distinguished guests were Samantha Burgess (ECMWF / Copernicus), Garyfallos Konstantinoudis (Imperial College London), Lisa Schipper (University of Bonn), and Serena Caucci (United Nations University), together with researchers and institutional representatives from across the Mediterranean basin.
The workshop fostered a transdisciplinary dialogue aimed at strengthening cooperation between science, institutions, and society, and at building a shared vision for preparedness, equity, and resilience in the Mediterranean. Key topics included the intensification of extreme climate events, pathways towards just and sustainable transitions, and participatory approaches to decision-making.
The event was supported by the international coordination team of FutureMed and local collaborating entities, contributing to the creation of a space for knowledge exchange, experience sharing, and best practices.
FutureMed is consolidating its role as an international platform for scientific cooperation, committed to advancing knowledge, promoting regional integration, and fostering joint action to address the climate challenges of the Mediterranean region.
