“Objetivo Planeta RTVE: The Mediterranean is Becoming Tropical”

Samira Khodayar Pardo analiza en Objetivo Planeta de RTVE cómo el calentamiento global está convirtiendo al Mediterráneo en un mar más cálido, inestable y vulnerable a fenómenos extremos.

This summer, surface temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea have reached unprecedented levels, with readings of up to 30°C in areas where such temperatures would have been unthinkable just a few decades ago. Far from being an isolated event, this phenomenon is part of a worrying trend of accelerated warming that is transforming the region’s climatic and ecological balance.

In the latest episode of RTVE’s Objetivo Planeta, Samira Khodayar Pardo — head of the Meteorology and Climatology department at CEAM — analyzes how global warming is altering the atmospheric and oceanic dynamics of the Mediterranean, intensifying extreme weather events and changing traditional weather patterns.

Marine biologist Ana Sabatés, from ICM-CSIC, adds her perspective by addressing the ecological consequences of marine warming, such as the arrival of tropical species that displace native ones and reshape marine ecosystems. This “tropicalization” of the Mediterranean poses a direct threat to biodiversity, fisheries, and the natural balance of our coasts.
Samira Khodayar’s participation in science communication programs like this reflects our institution’s strong commitment to excellent, rigorous, and accessible scientific outreach, helping to raise awareness and understanding of the challenges facing the Mediterranean in the context of global change.
