SUMMARY The present book consists of two parts. The first part deals with general aspects of air pollution. It also describes the Pan-European Programme for the Intensive Monitoring of Forest Ecosystems (EU/ICP-Forests) and the methodologies that this programme recommends for evaluating air pollution effects. The second part of the book focusses on ozone as one of the most important present-day pollutants. It begins with a description of what ozone is and how it can be injurious to life. Then there is a discussion about the effects of ozone on vegetation with special emphasis placed on techniques for evaluating visible ozone damage to different vegetal species. For this purpose, the book includes a series of colour plates showing typical visible injuries to various tree, shrub and herbaceous species found in our forests and surrounding areas. |
